Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that contained little new information.
