Minister Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This wider defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
