The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
